The Chairperson of the Wonduruba Community has issued a blistering condemnation following a deadly attack on a mining site on Saturday, describing the violence as a “barbaric act” that has desecrated the sacred Lenten season. Authorities in Wonduruba Administrative Payam confirmed that at least 36 people—including 24 civilians and 12 soldiers—were killed, while 16 others sustained injuries during the weekend assault. The attackers, suspected to be members of an armed opposition group, reportedly opened fire on civilians at around 8:00 PM on Saturday in the Kare-Nare area, also known as Khor Khaltan. Reacting to the tragedy, Wonduruba Community Chairperson Eng. Juma Stephen expressed deep shock over the scale of the loss. Speaking on behalf of the community, he lamented the timing of the violence, noting that it occurred while the Christian faithful were observing a period of holy reflection. “We, as the community of Wonduruba are shocked by the news from Kare-Nare,” Eng. Stephen said. “We condemn this barbaric act and offer our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.” The Chairperson questioned the motives behind such brutality during a time traditionally reserved for peace and repentance. “The whole Christian community is in a holy period,” Eng. Stephen stated. “I do not know what kind of heart would do this. People are in Holy Week, and yet such an incident is happening.” The local administration and security organs are reportedly monitoring the situation as the community begins the grim task of mourning the 36 individuals lost in the Khor Khaltan massacre.
