JUBA, South Sudan (Eye Radio) – The Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang Juuk, has directed the new leadership of the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) to prioritize rigorous inspection of goods at border entry points and modernize testing facilities across the country. Speaking in Juba on Thursday, March 12, during the official reception ceremony for the newly appointed Executive Director, Hon. Oiyland Dominic Kanuto, Minister Atong emphasized that the bureau is a “critical institution” responsible for consumer protection. Given South Sudan’s heavy reliance on imported products, the Minister noted that the Bureau of Standards plays a vital role in verifying the safety of consumable goods before they reach the market. She specifically highlighted the Nimule border as a priority area for strict oversight and urged the leadership to ensure laboratories are equipped with modern technology. “Leadership transitions are a normal and important part of strengthening institutions,” Minister Atong stated, while commending the outgoing leadership for ensuring a smooth handover. She further encouraged Hon. Kanuto to strengthen cooperation with all stakeholders to enhance the institution’s mandate. Accepting the responsibility, the newly appointed Executive Director, Hon. Oiylang Dominic Kanuto, paid tribute to his predecessor’s more than two decades of service to the National Bureau of Standards. Hon. Oiylang underscored the bureau’s critical legal mandate, which includes developing national standards, ensuring consumer protection, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). He pledged to bolster the institution’s capacity and credibility, particularly in advancing conformity assessment services at border points. “We must work as a team to build a strong institution,” Hon. Oiylang told the gathered staff, calling for unity to ensure efficient and effective service delivery. He reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with the Ministry of Trade and Industry to uphold the safety and quality of goods entering and leaving South Sudan. The outgoing Executive Director, Hon. Gloria Nyoka, congratulated her successor and extended her appreciation to the staff and partners who supported her during her tenure. She encouraged the incoming leadership to maintain a close working relationship with the Ministry of Trade and Industry to ensure the bureau’s objectives are met.
