The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces says about forty of its soldiers were killed and several others wounded during an attack on Abiemnhom County in the Ruweng Administrative Area. Military spokesperson Lul Ruai Koang said the assault targeted security positions in Abiemnhom and resulted in casualties among joint security forces, including senior officers. “Our positions were attacked simultaneously at Abiemnhom and as we speak on that day we lost thirty-six personnel from joint security forces,” Koang said. “I just received information that the number rose from thirty-six to forty. Among the wounded we even heard two brigadiers that were shot and wounded, other officers. So you could see it was not even a disaster to civilians alone, it was even a disaster to us. Now for us that’s our business to protect civilians and their property even when we get killed or wounded.” Koang said the military casualties occurred during confrontations following the attack. He also spoke about allegations that soldiers from the SSPDF were involved in the killing of civilians in Ayod County in Jonglei State, saying several personnel had been arrested and would face trial in a military court. “We have difficulties in terms of network connectivity but we were told that about sixty were involved, but I’m aware that the two officers along with several NCOs were arrested,” Koang said. “But as soon as we establish communication with the division commander we would be in a better position. But again, as soon as they are brought here, as soon as the general court starts, I’ll be inviting you.” Authorities in the Ruweng Administrative Area say the violence in Abiemnhom left one hundred and ninety-six people dead. Those killed include the county commissioner Paulino Wan and the county’s executive director.
