JUBA, South Sudan (Eye Radio) — The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) released a statement regarding the killings in Abiemnom County within the Ruweng Administrative Area. Authorities in Ruweng reported that the attack resulted in 170 deaths and 68 injuries. The fatalities included the Commissioner of Awarpiny County and the Executive Director of Abiemnom County. RJMEC stated that the violence affects efforts to establish peace and stability. The commission noted that the situation increases the humanitarian needs in the region. The body requested a cessation of hostilities and a reduction in tensions to prevent further loss of life. The statement noted that attacks against civilians and officials occur during clashes involving parties to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS). RJMEC indicated that these actions reduce public confidence in the peace process. The commission directed the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM) to conduct an investigation to determine the facts of the attack. RJMEC also requested that humanitarian agencies provide aid to the population in the affected area. The body concluded by calling for the start of political dialogue among the stakeholders.
