Authorities in the Abyei Administrative Area say more than 4,000 people displaced from neighbouring Ruweng Administrative Area are seeking shelter in the area following violence earlier this month. Abyei Minister of Information Yohana Akol said the displaced have been allocated land for settlement and received assistance from authorities working with NGOs in the region. He said a designated area has been identified to host families and provide shelter for the affected population. “When Abiemnhom County was attacked, many civilians fled to Abyei for safety. We allocated land for them to settle and provided support such as shelters in collaboration with local NGOs,” he said. “The displaced are about 4 thousand, currently staying in the town and at the women’s center. We have now identified a safer area a few kilometers from Abyei town for them to settle,” he added. The minister also appealed to humanitarian organizations to provide more support to meet the urgent needs of the displaced.
