Norway urges South Sudan leadership to resolve crisis through dialogue

The Minister of International Development of Norway states that South Sudan’s government and political actors must engage in dialogue to resolve the country’s crisis. Åsmund Grøver Aukrust made the remarks on Wednesday, March 25, during a media briefing in Juba following his visit to the County. He said his trip focused on engaging local authorities and stakeholders to help end the conflict, ensure protection of civilians, and allow humanitarian access. Aukrust added that the primary responsibility for resolving the crisis lies with South Sudan’s leadership and calls for constructive engagement with other political actors on the full implementation of the peace agreement and the conduct of elections. “We have been very clear in many meetings that this is the responsibility of all parties in this country, particularly political leaders, and especially the government. Everything starts and ends at the top level,” he said, stressing the need for inclusive political dialogue.” Aukrust said. During his visit to Renk, Aukrust says he observed strong cooperation among humanitarian partners supporting South Sudanese returnees and refugees from Sudan. He says he is encouraged by the efforts of non-governmental organisations, youth groups, and local authorities working together to address the humanitarian situation. “I am impressed by the collaboration among NGOs, youth, and local authorities in addressing the humanitarian crisis affecting both Sudan and South Sudan,” Aukrust said. Aukrust said Norway will continue to support South Sudan.
