The Interim Chairperson of the Parliamentary Caucus on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, has called on the Juba City Council to relocate dumping sites currently located on the outskirts of Juba, citing the growth of residential settlements in those areas. Lawmaker Bonguot Amum Oketch said the dumping sites were originally established far from residential zones, but rapid urban expansion has brought communities closer, raising health and environmental concerns. Following a visit over the weekend, he said he found families living next to the dumping grounds, where waste is being burned near homes. “Our people are now staying next to the dumping sites. These dumping sites were initially considered far from residential area. We went on Saturday and found out that communities are staying next to the dumping site. The wastes are burned just next to houses and people are staying there,” Amum said. “I want to appeal to Juba City Council to relocate these dumping sites far from the communities to a bit distanced location,” he added. Amum said relocating the sites would help protect public health and support orderly urban growth as the city continues to expand.
