Kiir swears in new officials, calls for unity

President Salva Kiir called for calm, unity, and renewed commitment to peace as newly appointed government officials were sworn in at the State House in Juba on Wednesday. According to a post on the Official Facebook Page of the Office of the President, Peter Chaleman Cawach was appointed Presidential Advisor for Peace, a role expected to support ongoing peace efforts. Joseph Nguen Monytuil returned as Governor of Unity State, resuming oversight of stability initiatives. Three deputy governors also took oaths representing Lakes State, Unity State, and Eastern Equatoria State, in line with efforts to promote inclusive governance and implement the peace agreement. In his address, President Kiir urged officials to focus on peacebuilding, service delivery, and cooperation, calling for unity among political actors and communities. He emphasized the need for collective action to address national challenges and prevent a return to conflict. Vice President Taban Deng Gai called for reconciliation and peaceful coexistence and urged the removal of obstacles to trade in Unity State. Presidential Advisor on Security Affairs Tut Gatluak Manime called for intensified peace efforts in Unity and Upper Nile regions. Officials from the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and opposition groups welcomed the appointments and reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation and full implementation of the peace agreement to ensure stability in South Sudan.
