Kiir assures South Africa: Elections will proceed without delay

President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday reaffirmed to South African Deputy President that elections in South Sudan will be held without delay, calling them a cornerstone of the peace process He made the statement during talks on Friday with South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile, focusing on accelerating the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement and strengthening bilateral cooperation. ‎According to Presidential Press Secretary Arek Aldo Ajou, the talks covered a range of strategic issues, including electoral support, peace implementation, and expanding economic partnerships. Deputy President Mashatile, who also serves as South Africa’s Special Envoy to South Sudan, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to peace and stability, emphasizing that an inclusive national dialogue remains essential and must be led by the South Sudanese people. He further called for increased engagement with non-signatory groups to de-escalate tensions and prevent further conflict. The two leaders reflected on the deep historical ties between South Sudan and South Africa and reviewed past high-level engagements that laid a foundation for further cooperation. The leaders also explored a potential visa waiver program and direct air links. President Kiir and Deputy President Mashatile agreed to hold the first South Africa–South Sudan Business Summit in Juba and discussed plans for Mashatile to visit South Sudan later this year.
