The Governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal State, Sherif Daniel Sherif, has exempted all small scale enterprises in Wau from paying taxes, saying the move is aimed at easing burdens on traders and boosting local economic activity. Governor Sherif made the announcement while presiding over the swearing-in of newly appointed officials at the State Secretariat General, Council of Ministers headquarters in Wau. He instructed the cabinet to step up service delivery across Western Bahr El-Ghazal State and ordered Wau Municipality to make water supply a top priority. “I instruct you to streamline business operations and enhance our revenue systems. You are also mandated to address the pressing issue of water supply in the town. Furthermore, every small enterprise should be exempt from taxation, for we are servants of the people,” the governor said. Among those sworn in were Robert Kornelio, State Advisor on Economic Affairs; Akol Majok Rok, Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement; Khamis Dhahia Omer, Minister of Trade, Industry and Mining; and Joseph Yel Atak, Deputy Mayor for Administration and Finance. Earlier last month, Governor Sharif granted tax exemptions to a total of 34 traders identified by the State Chamber of Commerce. They were severely affected by the January 17, 2025 incident in Wau, which saw attacks on Sudanese communities and destruction of their properties.
