The Governor of Unity State, Riek Bim Top, has ordered the registration of firearms in the state as part of efforts to improve security and regulate the possession of weapons. According to the order, the governor has directed local leaders, chiefs, and spiritual leaders to mobilize their communities, especially the youth, to cooperate with authorities during the registration exercise. The implementation of the directive is expected to begin as soon as possible. The move comes amid concerns from residents who have called for the mass confiscation of weapons believed to be held by members of the previously disbanded paramilitary group known as Terchuong. Local leaders say some individuals from the group failed to comply with a 2024 directive requiring them to surrender their firearms. Authorities say the order is part of ongoing efforts by the Unity State government to address security concerns and maintain peace and stability in the area.
