Governor Madhang: “I’m even tougher than Tueny,” rules out changes

The Governor of Lakes State, Maj. Gen. Madhang Majok Meen, has described himself as tougher than his predecessor as he assumes leadership of the state amid ongoing security and economic challenges. Speaking during the official handover ceremony in Rumbek from former Governor Lt. Gen. Rin Tueny Mabor Deng, Madhang said firm leadership is necessary to address instability and maintain order. Governor Madhang said while he respects the former governor’s contributions, he believes stronger and more uncompromising leadership is now required. “I am even tougher than Rin because he had some compromises. I do not have compromises,” he said. He pointed to persistent insecurity, including revenge attacks, cattle raiding, intercommunal tensions, and the spread of small arms among civilians as issues that require strict enforcement of the law. The governor stressed that restoring stability will require discipline, unity, and close coordination with national security institutions, including the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces. Despite describing himself as tougher, Governor Madhang said he will not make immediate changes to state officials. He explained that the security situation remains fragile and that reshuffling officials could complicate the already volatile environment. “There is internal and external security which is a very big threat, plus the economic crisis,” he said. He added that maintaining the current team will ensure continuity and stability while the government focuses on addressing insecurity and economic hardship. Governor Madhang called on leaders, civil servants, and communities across Lakes State to work together to sustain peace and move the state forward.
