Fake checkpoint gangs rob state official in Juba crackdown alert

The Central Equatoria State Government has flagged a surge in violent robberies in Juba as a high-priority security threat, ordering immediate action by security agencies to dismantle emerging criminal networks. The directive follows the 8th Ordinary Security Meeting held on 24 March 2026 at the State Secretariat in Juba, chaired by Deputy Governor Paulino Lokudu Obede. During the meeting, state security organs presented a detailed report highlighting a sharp increase in street robberies, particularly along the road to Juba International Airport. According to the report, a new wave of organized criminal gangs has emerged in the city. The groups reportedly operate using motorbikes and impersonate security personnel, setting up fake checkpoints at night to rob motorists and pedestrians. One of the victims was an advisor from the State Ministry of Gender. Speaking after the meeting, the Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement, Leon Abe, urged security forces to act swiftly and decisively against the gangs threatening public safety. Beyond crime, the committee also raised concern over a reported outbreak of Mpox in neighboring Western Equatoria State, calling on the national Ministry of Health to strengthen surveillance, prevention, and response measures. The meeting further appealed to the national Ministry of Interior to establish a town hall system aimed at improving coordination among security agencies. Authorities say operations will be intensified in the coming days, with a focus on restoring public confidence, enhancing inter-agency coordination, and addressing both security and public health risks.
