JUBA, South Sudan (Eye Radio) — The Central Equatoria State (CES) Ministry of Environment has unveiled plans to establish a specialized corporation dedicated to transforming waste management, recycling, and urban sanitation in Juba. The proposal for the “Juba City Cleaning and Beautification Corporation” was presented by the State Minister of Agriculture, Environment, and Forestry, Lily Kapuki Jurkin, during a state cabinet meeting chaired by Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony on Thursday. According to the ministerial memo, the proposed body aims to overhaul the current sanitation landscape in the capital. Key objectives of the corporation include: Systematic Waste Collection: Implementing structured schedules for refuse pickup across Juba’s residential and commercial zones. Recycling and Disposal: Moving beyond simple dumping toward modern waste-to-resource strategies and safe disposal methods. Environmental Compliance: Enforcing regulations to protect public health and restore the aesthetic appeal of the state capital. While the initiative was welcomed in principle, the State Cabinet decided to prioritize a comprehensive approach before final approval. Jacob Aligo-Lo Ladu, the State Minister of Peace Building, confirmed that the council unanimously agreed to defer the memo to the State Economic Cluster. The deferral is intended to allow for the integration of technical feedback from a broader range of stakeholders to ensure the corporation’s financial and operational sustainability. “The council of ministers resolved to defer the memo back to the economic cluster to incorporate the views and ideas of other relevant stakeholders,” Minister Aligo stated. “The minister has to submit the memo back to the council of ministers for further discussion after incorporating those recommendations.” The move signals a growing commitment by the state government to address Juba’s long-standing sanitation challenges through a structured, institutional framework rather than ad-hoc cleaning campaigns.
