The Council of Ministers has endorsed key resolutions from the African Union and the outcomes of the C5 meeting, aimed at accelerating the implementation of the peace agreement as the country prepares for elections at the end of the transitional period. The cabinet meeting, chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit, was briefed by the Minister of Presidential Affairs, Africano Mande, on the outcomes of the African Union Ad-hoc Committee for South Sudan, also known as the C5. The briefing followed the President’s participation in the recent AU Council of Heads of State and Government. The discussions focused on progress made and the next steps required to complete the remaining provisions of the revitalized peace agreement, which are seen as critical to stabilizing the country ahead of the anticipated elections. Speaking to the media after the meeting, the Minister of Information and government spokesperson, Ateny Wek Ateny, reiterated the government’s commitment to peace and stability as the country moves closer to the electoral period. “The Council of Ministers received a briefing from Minister Africano Mande on President Salva Kiir’s participation in the recent African Union Council of Heads of State and Government,” he said speaking to SSBC. He added that the cabinet unanimously adopted the briefing on the President’s engagement at the AU summit, as well as the resolutions reached during the C5 meeting. The council further reviewed proposals presented by the President on mechanisms for implementing the remaining provisions of the peace agreement aimed at resolving conflict in the country. “The cabinet also reviewed and approved the outcomes of the C5 meeting, including the President’s proposals on how the government of South Sudan should implement the remaining provisions of the revitalized peace agreement to resolve the ongoing conflict, which were confirmed by the C5,” he said. The approved proposals are expected to guide the government’s next steps in completing the peace process and steering the country toward a peaceful and credible electoral process.
