The Ma’di community has lost one of its most distinguished daughters, Mama Mary Becu, who passed away this morning at Nimule Hospital while serving as Deputy Manager of the Central Bank’s Nimule Branch. The news was confirmed by the Madi Welfare Association (MAWA) in Juba. Mama Mary Becu, a daughter of the Kiloloro clan with maternal ties to the Patibi clan, was a key figure in South Sudan’s history and development. She was a signatory founder and former executive of MAWA, Juba, and one of the pioneering women who shaped the Ma’di community’s civic and social life. “Our community has lost another big battle in the life of Mama Mary Becu,” MAWA said in a statement. During South Sudan’s liberation struggle, Mama Mary Becu was an active member of the SPLM, contributing in various capacities until independence. She later became one of the founders of the Central Bank of Southern Sudan before the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), which later evolved into the Bank of South Sudan. Over the years, she served in senior positions at the Central Bank in Wau, Rumbek, and finally Nimule, where she passed away while leading the branch. Mourners have gathered at Gudele Block 6 in Juba and in Nimule to pay their respects. The MAWA Secretary of Services said that burial arrangements will be communicated once finalized and encouraged all community members to participate in celebrating her life. “We urge all members of the Ma’di community to come and celebrate the life of one of our icons so that her soul may finally rest in peace,” the statement read. Mama Mary Becu is remembered as a trailblazing woman whose work in banking, community development, and the liberation struggle left a lasting legacy for South Sudan and the Ma’di people.
